| Matias Gonzalez Chavajay decided around 1992 that he could earn more money painting mementos for tourists than doing fine art. He, therefore, now has paintings which are of three different qualities of execution. The poorest is what he calls obras comericales (commercial works). A better quality of work is what he calls obras originales (original paintings). His best quality of work are the paintings he did before around 1992, and the few I have, I am unlikely to sell. Even the obras comerciales of Matias are better than those the majority of the Tz'utuhil artists who paint for the tourist market. He has always had a good eye, and although these are painted quickly, they still benefit from his eye and artistic ability. They, however, are paintings he has painted time and time again. Although I would prefer if they were painted more carefully, I decided to purchase a few of his better themes because there is still something captivating about his work. If they sell, I may continue to carry his work. | |
