Julian Coche Mendoza was the second of five brothers who would become painters. Julian was initially taught by his older brother Antonio Coche Mendoza, San Juan la Laguna's first Maya painter. Julian showed an exceptional natural ability for painting. His family decided to send him to art school in Guatemala City. There he was exposed to many different styles of painting and techniques, but unfortunately he lost his way. He had come to the school with his own unique style of painting, but when he left he floundered. He was painting in a variety of styles, none of the unique, and none which really truly expressed his Maya culture. Around 2004 he began experimenting with a new style of painting shown below. Although it is not in the traditional Tz'utuhil Maya style of painting, Julian found his own way of expressing himself and his culture through his art. His style is now being widely copied by other artists, some of whom own galleries in Santiago Atitlan. Julian is the original.

Julian, unfortunately, often repeats his paintings. They will have minor changes in objects in backgrounds and in the colors. Over time they this paintings evolve as his style and interests change. Do not buy his paintings assuming they will become very valuable over time. Buy them because they give you joy (I have about eight). His paintings are inexpensive, and because of the choices he makes as an artist, they are likely to remain so.
