| Vicenta Puzul de Gonzalez became the first
Tz’utuhil Mayan woman to paint in oil, currently one of only
three. She began in1992 under the tutelage of her husband
Mariano Gonzalez Chavajay a renowned Tz’utuhil Mayan artist.
Like the other two Tz’utuhil women who became artists, Vicenta
spent much of her time helping her husband on the ambitious
canvases he husband loved to paint. Vicenta’s own paintings seem
so like that of her husband that Tz’utuhil artists mistakenly
insisted that the paintings were too good and must be the work
of her husband. Vicenta loves to paint faces, and now her faces
may even be slightly better than those of her husband. Mariano
is justly proud of his wife’s ability and wants her to succeed
as on her own independent of him, a big step for a Mayan man
from a traditional Mayan town. |

maya tz’utuhil en pintar al óleo, y una de las únicas cuatro
pintoras que hay. Empezó en 1992 bajo la tutela de su marido
Mariano González Chavajay, renombrado artista maya tz’utuhil. Al
igual que las otras dos mujeres tz’utuhiles que se han
convertido en artistas, Vicenta pasó mucho tiempo ayudando a su
esposo con los ambiciosos lienzos que le encantaba pintar. Las
obras de Vicenta se parecían tanto a las de su esposo que varios

justicia, Mariano está orgulloso de la habilidad de su esposa y

gran paso para una mujer maya de una comunidad tradicional. |
