| .. | [Childbirth] Like "Extracando Pozoņa", "El Parto" is Matias's copy of a much finer painting by Pedro Rafael Gonzalez Chavajay (right). Painting for the tourist market does not allow time for the artist to carefully think out his themes to make each painting original like all of Pedro Rafael Gonzalez Chavajay's paintings. The artists have to churn out paintings in order to make a living. I pay the artists far better than galleries do so that they can do quality work. I bought "El Parto," Etracando Pozoņa," and "Bajando Banana" in a gallery in Santiago Atitlan. After that experience, I decided to only deal directly with the artists and never again through galleries. (Only each trip to Guatemala, I would buy no more than two or three paintings from galleries.) I now ask Matias to paint me only original paintings, knowing that he probably won't copy someone else's painting, but realizing he might do the same painting again sometime in the future. | |||||||||||||
