| The first Tz'utuhil painter, Rafael Gonzalez y Gonzalez, had four sons. Two of his sons Jose Antonio and Rafael Angel became painters. Jose Antonio Gonzalez paints much in the style of his father, a style more typical of naive or folk paintings than the style later created by the Tz'utuhil painters of San Pedro. Both Pedro Rafael Gonzalez Chavajay and Mariano Gonzalez Chavajay began oil painting working for Jose Antonio in 1976. He would have them do drawings which he would then paint. Jose Antonio's paintings can usually be recognized by a careful rendition of a church in front of which he paints lots of tiny figures of people in a market. Jose Antonio is especially know for his churches, and although he paints the same churches over and over again, he always changes the people and their activities. | |
