Almost invariably the oldest and most beautiful building in the Maya towns  is the Catholic church. Many of these churches survive from the first century after the Conquest, while others have been destroyed and rebuilt. Jose Antonio Gonzalez Escobar, son of the first Tz'utuhil Maya painter Rafael Gonzalez y Gonzalez, is fascinated by the architecture of these churches and the activity around them. Most of his paintings contain both a church and a market. Unlike the next generation  of painters, he is not trying to document the variety of Maya customs and traditions, but just those aspects which catch his fancy. Although he often repeats the particular churches and towns, the paintings are always different. On this page, many of the paintings are arranged by town, so you can see how he changes things even with the same subject.
