| In 1991 faced with the expenses of
a growing family, Matias Gonzalez Chavajay. He taught his wife
Maria Teodora how to paint. Maria Teodora was only the second
Tz’utuhil Mayan woman to take up painting, the first being her
sister-in-law Vicenta Puzul de Gonzalez. Unlike Vicenta who
sometimes helped her husband and sometimes painted on her own,
Maria Teodora ended up working with her husband to do commercial
painting for the tourists to be sold in the galleries in
Santiago Atitlán. They set up a production line where one person
would do the backgrounds, one the people etc. This way they
quickly produced enough paintings to make it worthwhile
financially. By 2002 they had a three story house of their own,
and both Matias and Maria Teodora decided she should begin
painting on her own. Her paintings often have themes of special
interest to women. |
En 1991, encarando los gastos de una familia en crecimiento,
Matías González enseñó a su esposa María Teodora como pintar.
María Teodora fue la segunda mujer maya tz’utuhil en dedicarse a
la pintura, siendo la primera, su cuñada Vicenta Puzul de
González. A diferencia de Vicenta que a veces ayudaba a su
esposo y a veces pintaba sola, María Teodora terminó trabajando
con su esposo pintando comercialmente para las galerías
turísticas de Santiago Atitlán. Ellos instalaron una línea de
producción en la cual uno de ellos pintaría los fondos y el otro
las figuras, etc. Trabajando juntos ellos produjeron rápidamente
suficientes pinturas para hacer esto viable económicamente. En
el 2002 ellos tenían su propia casa de tres niveles y decidieron
que María Teodora debería empezar a pintar sola. Las pinturas de
María Teodora frecuentemente contienen temas de especial interés
para las mujeres. |
