| The paintings of Lorenzo
Gonzalez Chavajay are at the same time the most naive and most modern of
all the Tz'utuhil Maya artists. Like Grandma Moses he took up painting
late in life, after he retired. Unfortunately, he died just as he had
reached the height of his powers as an artist. I had asked him to paint
twenty large paintings which I believed would showcase his artistic
genius. After only finishing five, he got sick and died in 1996. The
last painting he was working on was never finished, but it drives me
crazy every time I see it because it would have been one of his two or
three best. With the exception of the unfinished painting, his family
entrusted me with all of his paintings. I have held on to his paintings
since then, not sure of how I wanted to deal with them, knowing there
would be no others. Some of the paintings below are among the first
paintings he did, paintings were he was learning how to paint and who he
was as an artist. I am holding onto about twenty of his best paintings
of all sizes, enough to have a show of his work. Hopefully some museum
will end up with these paintings. The remainder of his paintings I am
offering to the public. Please note: When Lorenzo painted he often left very little margin for stretching the painting. As a result they need to have special stretchers built (rather than stock stretchers I buy for the other artists) and be very carefully stretched so that important details at the edges are not lost. I don't trust that all commercial framers will be sensitive to Lorenzo's vision, so I am only selling his paintings stretched. About half of the paintings are already stretched, but the others will have to have special stretchers made. This may take a longer time to get this done for his paintings than for the other artists. |
