| Juana Elva Vasquez de Ramirez and her husband Nicolas Ramirez run an art gallery in Santiago Atitlán. It is on the main road going up from the dock to the center of town. Almost the only paintings of note in the gallery are the small watercolors they do themselves. They are on a stiff paper called cartulina. The watercolors which depict processions, dances, and religious rituals are especially appealing. The first time I bought paintings from them, there were five watercolors done by Juana Elva and one done by her husband. For me the paintings of Juana Elva were slightly superior to those done by her husband. I told them I would want more on my next trip. When I returned to Guatemala, all the watercolors they had were signed by Nicolas Ramirez. When I questioned him about it, he said they both worked on the paintings, and it was the same whoever signed them. Although I have not seen enough paintings done by each of them individually to say for certain, I suspect that the majority of the paintings below were actually done by Juana Elva Vasquez de Ramirez rather than her husband who signed them all except for the first row of paintings. I am attributing them, however, to both Nicolas Ramirez and his wife Juana Elva Vasquez de Ramirez. | |
