| María Elena Curruchiche comes from
an illustrious family of Maya painters. Her grandfather Andrés
Curruchich was the first Kaqchikel Maya oil painter. An
exhibition of his works in 1956 at the de Young Museum in San
Francisco, was the museum’s first blockbuster— on a daily basis
people waited in line to get in. His son Vicente Curruchich,
María’s father, also became a well know painter in Guatemala.
María Elena and her cousin Rosa Elena, both granddaughters of
Andres Curruchich, are the first generation of women artists
from San Juan Comalapa. Shortly after her only daughter
tragically died, María Elena won first place in Guatemala’s most
prestigeous art competition, the Paiz Biennial. Devastated by
the death of her daughter, she stopped working for two years,
but she now is painting again. |

una ilustre familia de pintores Mayas. Su abuelo Andrés
Curruchiche fue el primer pintor en óleo de origen Maya
Kaqchikel. Una exhibición de su trabajo en 1956 en el Museo
Young de San Francisco, fue la atracción principal del museo, a
diario las personas formaron largas colas para entrar. Su hijo
Vicente Curruchiche, el padre de María, también se convirtió en
un reconocido pintor en Guatemala. María Elena y su prima Rosa
Elena, ambas nietas de Andrés Curruchiche, son la primera
generación de mujeres artistas en San Juan Comalapa. Poco
después de que su única hija murió trágicamente, María Elena
ganó el primer lugar en la competencia más prestigiosa de
Guatemala, La Bienal de Arte Paiz. Devastada por la muerte de su
