. Mi Segundo Piel (My Second Skin)
. Oil on canvas. 2004, 36.5"h. x 25.75"w.
.
Paula Nicho Cumes always wears the traditional traje (dress) of her community San Juan Comalapa. She says she would feel naked if she wore western style clothes. The title states how she and other Maya women feel about their traje, that it is their second skin. The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian has an earlier painting by Paula of the same theme in its permanent collection. It is a smaller painting and shows the designs of the traje painted in color all over the skin of the Maya woman. It this painting the designs of the traje look to be incised into the woman's skin.
